Before Anything Else

On Indian skin, the settings matter more than the brand of machine

Indian and darker skin contains more melanin in the surface layer, and laser treats melanin as a target. That's exactly what makes hair and tattoo removal work — and it's also why a setting that's fine on lighter skin can burn or darken darker skin.

The practical answer is wavelength selection plus conservative energy. For hair reduction, longer wavelengths such as 1064 nm are preferred on Indian skin because they pass through the surface layer with less absorption. For tattoos and pigment, the wavelength is matched to the colour being treated — there is no single setting that does everything.

Treatments are also spaced out rather than rushed. Stacking sessions too closely on dark skin is one of the commonest causes of the pigmentation that people then come in to have treated. If a clinic is offering to do more, faster, that isn't experience — it's a risk.

Every plan here starts with an in-person assessment and, where appropriate, a patch test on a small area before a full treatment.

Spacing
Sessions are spaced deliberately — closer is not better on darker skin

Dull, oily, congested skin Carbon peel Often 4–6 sessions, 2–3 weeks apart
Uneven tone, mild marks Laser facial / laser toning Often 4–6 sessions, spaced a few weeks apart

Typical ranges seen in practice, not a promise. Your session count depends on your hair, ink, skin and how it responds — confirmed after examination.

01

Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment inside the hair follicle. The light is absorbed by that pigment, heats the follicle, and reduces its ability to produce hair. Because the follicle has to be in its active growth phase to respond, treatments are spaced to catch each area at the right time — which is why a course is needed rather than one session.

Common areas are the upper lip and chin, underarms, arms, legs, bikini line, back and chest. Coarse, dark hair responds best. Fine, light, grey and white hair has little pigment for the laser to target and generally doesn't respond — if that's your hair type, you'll be told honestly rather than sold a course. New hair can also appear over time with hormonal changes, which is worth investigating rather than treating repeatedly.

SessionsOften 6–8 or more
Spacing4–6 weeks (face) · 6–8 weeks (body)
DowntimeNone — mild redness may settle in hours
Ask about laser hair removal for your area Before your session: shave the area about a day before. Don't wax, thread, pluck or use hair-removal creams for 4–6 weeks beforehand — those remove the follicle the laser needs to target.

Q-Switch Laser Tattoo Removal

Q-switch laser breaks tattoo ink into fragments small enough for the body's own clearance system to carry away. Different ink colours absorb different wavelengths, so more than one setting is typically used across a course — black, dark blue and brown respond best, while reds and oranges need their own wavelength.

Green, pastel shades and white ink are the hardest, and some can't be fully cleared. White ink in particular can darken when treated, which is discussed before starting. Amateur tattoos often clear in 5–10 sessions; professional, multi-colour tattoos commonly need 10–15 or more, spaced 6–8 weeks apart to let the skin and the clearance process do their work.

What no honest clinic will promise: complete removal. Residual pigment, a faint ghost outline or a change in skin texture can remain, especially on Indian skin, where darkening or lightening of the treated area is a recognised risk. A realistic target is significant fading, discussed with you after seeing the tattoo.

Carbon Peel

A carbon peel — sometimes called a Hollywood peel — starts with a layer of medical carbon lotion applied to the face. It settles into the pores and binds to oil and dead cells. A Q-switch laser is then passed over the skin; the carbon absorbs the energy and lifts away with the debris, which is what produces the immediate glow.

It's used for oily and congested skin, visible pores, dullness and mild acne — and it's popular before an event because there's typically no downtime. Results are temporary and build with a course rather than a single session, so it sits well alongside a broader plan: usually a course of 4–6 sessions spaced 2–3 weeks apart, with occasional maintenance afterwards.

On Indian skin, the risk with carbon peels comes from settings that are too high or sessions that come too close together, which can trigger pigmentation rather than reduce it. That's why the spacing and the energy level are set deliberately here.

Laser Facial & Laser Toning

Laser toning is a low-energy Q-switch treatment that works on pigment sitting close to the surface — dullness, mild tanning, uneven tone and the flat marks left behind by acne. Rather than removing skin, it breaks down small amounts of pigment gradually across a course, which is why the improvement is even rather than dramatic.

It's often combined with medical skincare and, where the concern is pigment or melasma, planned carefully alongside melasma treatment — because on Indian skin, toning done too aggressively or too often can cause the pigment to bounce back darker. Sessions are spaced for that reason, and progress is reviewed rather than assumed.

SessionsOften 4–6

DowntimeTypically none

Prep & Aftercare

The parts that decide your result

Before your session

  • Stay out of the sun and off tanning for about two weeks beforehand — tanned skin competes with the laser's target
  • Shave the area about 24 hours before hair removal — don't wax, thread or pluck for 4–6 weeks
  • Come with clean skin, free of makeup, deodorant or creams on the area
  • Tell the doctor about any medicine you take — some, including certain antibiotics and acne medication, make skin photosensitive
  • Mention any cold sore history if the face is being treated

After your session

  • Sunscreen daily on the treated area — non-negotiable, and the single biggest factor in avoiding marks
  • Keep the area clean and moisturised, and let any scabbing fall off on its own
  • Skip scrubs, strong actives, saunas and very hot showers for the period you're advised
  • Don't pick, itch or scrub the treated skin — this is how pigment changes start

If you notice blistering, prolonged pain, or skin that keeps getting darker or lighter after a session, contact the clinic rather than waiting for your next appointment.

Suitability

When we postpone or adjust laser treatment

Suitability is assessed in person — these are the situations that change the plan.

Needs a wait, a different approach, or a referral

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding — laser hair removal is usually postponed, since hormonal changes make hair growth and results unpredictable; it's typically revisited a few months afterwards
  • Recently tanned, sunburnt or using a tanning product — treatment waits until the tan settles
  • Active infection, open skin, cold sore or a flare of eczema or psoriasis in the area
  • Grey, white, red or very fine light hair — there isn't enough pigment in the hair for hair removal to work
  • Green, pastel or white tattoo ink — outcomes are limited and need to be discussed honestly beforehand
  • Photosensitising medication, a bleeding disorder, or a known tendency to keloid or poor healing
  • Hair growth that has suddenly increased or changed pattern — that's worth investigating medically first
FAQ

Laser questions patients ask

Most people describe a quick snapping or warm pinprick sensation while the laser fires, rather than continuous pain. Hair removal on thicker hair and tattoo removal generally feel sharper than toning or a carbon peel. Settings are matched to your skin, and numbing can be used for sensitive areas.

Usually six to eight or more, because hair grows in cycles and only actively growing follicles respond. Facial areas are treated about every four to six weeks, body areas every six to eight. Coarse, dark hair responds best; results vary between people and no specific amount of reduction can be guaranteed.

Laser is widely used on Indian skin, but it needs the right wavelength and conservative energy — a setting suited to lighter skin can burn or darken darker skin. Longer wavelengths and spaced-out sessions reduce that risk, and daily sunscreen protects the result. Darkening or lightening of treated skin is still a recognised possibility; if it happens, it's managed rather than ignored.

Not always, and no one should promise it. Black, dark blue and brown ink clears best; green, pastels and white are difficult, and white ink can darken when treated. Faint residual pigment or a ghost outline can remain, and multiple sessions over a long period are usually required. The realistic target is set after the doctor sees your tattoo.

The laser targets pigment in the hair, and grey, white and very light hair has almost none — so there's nothing for the energy to absorb into. The same applies to very fine, light facial hair. If that's your hair type, you'll be told before booking a course rather than after.

It depends on the treatment, the size of the area and how many sessions you need — a small patch of hair isn't the same as full legs, and a small black tattoo isn't the same as a large multi-colour piece. You'll get a per-session price and a total for the plan before starting. Current laser offers are listed on the offers page.
